NORTH TONAWANDA - A North Tonawanda teen who was seriously injured in a bicycle crash Monday night apparently ignored oncoming traffic and rode through a red light, police said.
Ashley Vandervanter, 16, of Porter Avenue was listed in serious, but stable condition today at Erie County Medical Center after being hit by four-door sedan being driven by Chong Neiswonger, 63, of North Tonawanda just before 10:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Twin City Highway and Wheatfield Street, according to North Tonawanda Police Patrol Capt. Roger Zgolak.
Witnesses told police Vandervanter was riding her bicycle eastbound down the middle of Wheatfield Street and ignored the red light. She was then struck by Neiswonger who had passed a green light at the intersection as she headed northbound on Twin City Highway, said Zgolak.
Vandervanter was charged with running a red light, Zgolak said. Neiswonger was not charged.
