Fiery Clarendon crash tied to DWI

A Batavia man who escaped serious injury late Sunday night, when his car crashed and burned, has been charged with driving while intoxicated, Orleans County sheriff's deputies reported this morning.

Keith J. Stevens, 57, was behind the wheel of a westbound car that missed a curve on State Route 31-A in the Town of Clarendon and ran off the north side of the road. The car hit a sign post, utility pole and tree before bursting into flames, deputies said.

Stevens, who was traveling alone, was taken by ambulance that night to Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport, where he was treated and released.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated and other, unspecified, traffic-related offenses. Deputies said additional DWI charges may be lodged, pending the results of blood tests.

Stevens is scheduled to appear Sept. 10 in Clarendon Town Court.
