A British man and his five-year-old granddaughter are reported to have drowned at a beach in Portugal.

The incident occurred at the tourist resort of Nazare, some 60 miles north of Lisbon at 14:00 BST.

The reports say the Britons were spotted in rough seas by fishermen near Salgado beach and were pulled out along with the child's grandmother.

The Foreign Office says it is aware of the reports and is in touch with local Portuguese authorities.

The girl's parents were reported to be on the beach at the time. The grandmother was taken to hospital and was said to be out of danger.

Antonio Jose de Albuquerque, head of Nazare port, told the AFP news agency: "When help arrived, they were able to save the grandmother, but the grandfather was already dead.

"The first-aid workers tried in vain to revive the girl for nearly an hour."
