Cyclonic wind formation witnessed at Hillery Park

What was that whirlwind that blew through Hillery Park in South Buffalo Saturday afternoon?

People attending the opening game of the South Buffalo Football Association at the field off Mineral Springs Road reported witnessing a cyclonic wind formation shortly before 2 p.m. It cut diagonally across the middle of the football field, lifting yard markers and small tents set up by spectators.

"Once it got to the side of the field ... then you could see the outline of it," said Toni Ruberto, an editor for The Buffalo News who was attending the game. The formation, which was carrying debris, was taller than a two-story building it passed by, she said.

"It did look more like a waterspout" than a tornado, Ruberto said.

A Buffalo Fire Department dispatcher said an ambulance was dispatched to the park to treat somebody who had been hit in the head. But there was no indication the call was connected to a weather event, the dispatcher said.

Meanwhile, whatever it was didn't even register a blip on the radar at the National Weather Service Office in Buffalo.

"There's absolutely nothing on," said a meteorologist, who noted the lack of winds, precipitation and even clouds in the sky.
