At least, the adage will prove true for local notables such as Assemblyman Sean Ryan, school activist Samuel Radford and Buffalo Zoo President Donna Fernandes. They are all slated to perform their favorite roles by the Bard as they compete to become Buffalo's Shakespearean Idol in a program upon which the curtain rises at 7:30 tonight in the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society Museum, 25 Nottingham Court. Fernandes plans to bring one of the zoo's snakes for her rendition of Cleopatra's death scene. A reception will follow. There is a $25 donation, which benefits the Partnership for the Public Good.

Young the Giant, the Southern California alternative rock band whose self-titled 2010 debut CD made many best-of-the-year lists, will headline tonight's Thursday at the Harbor series at the Erie Canal Harbor Central Wharf. First seen here in April 2011 at Mohawk Place, the quintet will follow the Canadian band Bahamas and Nashville-based indie rockers the Apache Relay. Music starts at 5 p.m.

Elton John fans can revisit the pop rock legend's greatest hits in the tribute show "Rocket Man." It opens at 8:30 tonight with dancers, elaborate costumes and a full on-stage band in the Avalon Theatre at Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Falls, Ont. The show continues through July 29. Tickets start at $25.

Author Lania Knight, whose first novel, "Three Cubic Feet," about a gay teen struggling to come of age in a repressed Missouri town, makes her first visit to Buffalo tonight. Knight, who teaches creative writing at Eastern Illinois University, will read from her book at 7 p.m. in Talking Leaves Books, 3158 Main St.

Underwater photojournalist Brian Skerry will be the guest lecturer in the "Water Matters" lecture series at 10:45 a.m. in the Chautauqua Institution Ampitheater. Before he started working for National Geographic 14 years ago, Skerry spent more than 10,000 hours underwater, mostly photographing shipwrecks off the coast of his native New England. Now he's an internationally renowned nature photographer and advocate for preserving the world's endangered fishing stocks.

Kids love the current Buffalo Museum of Science exhibit, "Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body," but there's more to it than youngsters imagine. An adults-only approach to the topic will be given from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in a Science Café program at the museum.
