Soldiers attached to the Special Task Force in Plateau State on Sunday averted a bloody clash between Christians and Muslims when some miscreants vandalised 12 cars parked outside a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Farin Gada, Jos.
The miscreants had defied the tight security mounted in the state capital by hurling stones at cars parked outside the church as they made their way from a Muslim worship centre after Eid prayers.
Youths in the predominantly Christian area swiftly mobilised for a counter-attack but were stopped by soldiers who started shooting into the air.
The soldiers also dispersed the miscreants.
The state police command in a statement signed by its Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Danjuma Azikiti, said it was unfortunate that some misguided Muslim youths still went ahead to forment trouble in spite of the peace parleys, warnings and admonitions from security agencies.
The state government in a statement by the Commissioner of Information, Mr. Abraham Yiljap, condemned th clash.
The state government described the clash as a “very disturbing incident, especially against the background of peace building in that area of recent.”
