Krull Park beach closed again

LOCKPORT - The Niagara County Health Department announced today that it has closed Krull Park beach on Lake Ontario for the second time this summer because of elevated levels of e. coli bacteria found in water samples.

Also closed for the same reason was the beach at Camp Kenan in Somerset, which is open only to those attending the camp, sponsored by the Lockport Family YMCA.

County Environmental Health Director James J. Devald said the high e. coli levels were found both in shallow samples about two feet below the surface of the water, and in deeper samples about four feet below the surface.

Devald said high e. coli readings have been found this week at almost every non-beach sampling site along Niagara County's lakeshore.

The department is making plans for DNA testing of the bacteria to determine its source, Devald said.
