The Aurora Police Department has released its first official report on the shootings that took place at a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" on Friday (July 20). According to the report, approximately 50 victims were wounded in the shooting, with at least 12 confirmed dead. Ten bodies are reportedly still inside the theater, their conditions currently unknown.
According to the report, police first received word of the shooting at 12:39 a.m. through numerous phone calls, with officers arriving on the scene moments later, where they "arrested one party at the rear of the theater." Witnesses told police that the suspect "appeared" at the front of one of the theaters at the Century 16 Multiplex and "threw some type of gas or explosive device and started shooting." A rifle, handgun and gas mask were recovered at the scene, with a third gun still inside the theater. Though the suspect is not named in the report, the shooter's identity has since been revealed as James Holmes, a 24-year-old local resident.
Twelve individuals have been confirmed as deceased, "with the bodies of 10 victims still at the crime scene inside the theater." Two more victims died at local hospitals. On the condition and age range of the victims, the Aurora police reports: "The injured and dead include a wide age range. The conditions of the injured also vary, with some suffering very serious wounds." Family members seeking to reunite with loved ones have been directed to Gateway High School at 1300 S. Sable Blvd.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the investigation, the report states. A press conference will be held at 11:00 a.m. MST.
In a statement, President Barack Obama weighed in on the tragic shooting: "Michelle and I are shocked and saddened by the horrific and tragic shooting in Colorado ... We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded. As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family."
