You’ll Never Lose the Remote Again: Gesture Controls That Work

The idea of gesture controls—waving an arm or flashing a peace sign to make my electronics do my bidding—makes my inner nerd giddy. It just feels like the future, you know? In the present, though, most gesture-controlled products feel clumsy and less convenient than the basic tactile options.

EyeSight’s new SingleCue gets a little closer to my geek ideal. There are no stupid rings or bracelets to strap on—once it’s plugged in, you just raise your hand and swing it side-to-side to control your entire media center and smart home. The hardware isn’t fancy; it’s basically a webcam in a slick black box. The software is what sets this apart: It’s easier to use than any other device of its kind, and after just a few minutes of playing with one (and yes, “playing” is a good word here), I found the movements natural and easy. It even made those miserable Roku and Apple TV menus manageable.
